My Second Life Drawing Class

Yesterday I went to my second life drawing class. Here is the result.

I think the model was sitting in a position that was more dificult to draw than last time, or maybe it was the angle that I was looking at her from. Anyway, although I'm not happy with her face I am pleased with my overall progress - after all, I didn't even draw her face last time! I wasn't sure what progress I had made, if any, until I came home and viewed my first and second drawing side by side. If nothing else, I'm pleased that the drawing fits on the paper this time!

First Life Drawing

I feel that the areas I need to work on now are drawing hands and feet in detail, and drawing portraits using a model rather than a photograph.

Thanks for visiting my blog Undaunted. I really love your blog, and that you are on a new journey. I'm all about a good journey! I'll definitely be returning again and again.

Your life study drawings are very sensitive. For years I used to take life drawing classes weekly. Loved it! Miss it...hey, maybe I should look into starting that up again. But, when I look back at all those drawings Inotice they were done with such force and boldness. Your drawings portraya much more delicate approach to your subject. Nice job.

Peace & Love.

Thank you Connie :) I really liked those paintings of the little girl that you did. When I have a chance I shall look through more of your blog.

Is the delicate approach a good thing? My art teachers at school always told me not to be afraid of the pencil! I'm glad you like it though. Thank you.

Wow, I will say this looks great!

I am not sure if I am using the tem under painting correctly but that is how Paulette uses the term. Basically what you do is sketch your face, then paint it with titanium white (2 coats), then you mix your flesh tone and cover the face with that, add shadows and highlights and that is the under painting. Next you do eyes, lips etc.. For the rest of the work, I think we bring out the features using artists crayons.

Thank you Kathy! And thank you for explaining about the under-painting process.

When I first started painting in January I started a portrait, which I haven't gone back to since, but I just sort of jumped straight in with the colour. Anita uses under-painting as well, but she paints the outline and shading in blue, and then fills it in with colour. I find it very interesting to see all the different techniques and processes that people use.

Can you tell me what the purpose of painting with white first is? Are you using acrylics?

Undaunted,

The purpose of using white first is really simple. I forgot to explain that the very first thing I do when working in this mixed media venue, is lay down a background. Your background fills the enitre canvas or substrate. I paint (in acrylics) various colors and designs, then add my collage elements, maybe do some rubber stamping around the edges (sometimes the inks will bleed through your white face so I am careful to mput the inks off to the side), then I transfer or draw directly to the substrate, my portrait. So the face will initiallyl be the background color. The white gets rid of the background work quite nicely. SOmetimes I will leave some of the collage elelments peering through the face but usually I white everything out. Then after that is dry, I do the underpainting. YES, I typiclly use acrylics (I prefer Glden, but will use the cheap stuff to).

Hope that helps

Ah I see! I was confused because I thought you were painting white onto a white canvas! Thank you for explaining :)
